9. Course description:
The aim of the course is to develop the English language and study skills of students who have been identified as having a low level of English attainment, so that by the end of the course, they can actively participate in mainstream university courses to an international standard.
10. Course objectives:
The aim of the course is to develop the English language and study skills of students who have been identified as having difficulty in the previous year’s study, so that by the end of the summer course, they can actively participate in mainstream university courses to an international standard.
Students are to successfully demonstrate the following English language and study skills:
- Understanding and answering questions
- Knowledge and use of vocabulary and rubrics
- Reading and understanding general and academic texts
- Understanding the principles of research
- Listen and understand general and academic texts
- Listening and note taking
- Writing thesis statements
- Participating in discussions and debates
11. Learning and teaching approaches:
Whilst lecturing is the recognised form of instruction for most disciplines, teachers are encouraged to use their imagination when deciding approaches and methods of instruction. An eclectic approach, integrating multiple methods is required to facilitate the appropriate learning environment for individual students as learning a language involves doing rather than talking about doing.
